Blundering Local government minister Ben Phiri is at it again! He has installed Mtima Gondwe Paramount Chief Chikulamayembe at a secret ceremony that was conducted at senior chief Mwankhunikira Headquarters in Rumphi District Tuesday morning.
There are disputes over the chiefstainancy and the matter is in court, but Phiri, thought he would pull a fast one over the courts of law by installing Mtima Gondwe as Paramount Chief Chikulamayembe.
As a result, the rival camp of Joseph Bongololo torched the Paramount Chief office at Bolero.
From the venue, the newly installed Chikulamayembe was escorted by armed police to Rumphi Boma.
This is not the first time the blundering minister has brought chaos in the country.
Just a few days ago, he rescinded on a decision to remove the vendors from the streets after Blantyre and Lilongwe City Councils had already started implementing an action to remove the vendors from the streets.
Many viewed this decision as reflecting badly on government saying it showed that government ‘was weak’.
Phiri was at it again when President Peter Mutharika gave him money amounting to K10 million to give the vendors when he visited Blantyre last month. As a result, Phiri, shared the money with the cadets and the ‘genuine’ vendors caused uproar in Blantyre with demonstrations and riot police had to be called in to quell the situation.
Analysts say Phiri is gunning for the 2024 presidency and in the long run he is overdoing this and blundering. He is an accident waiting to happen.
On 11th October, 2019, Phiri drove all the way from Lilongwe to Blantyre to launch a sign post of one way traffic, blowing millions of tax payers’ money in the process. It was a job that not even a mayor could do, but an administration officer at Blantyre City Council would have done.
Malawians are eagerly waiting for the next blunder by the blundering minister Ben Phiri after the Rumphi fiasco.
