Impunity at it’s best. President Peter Mutharika has ordered that Mr Everton Chimulirenji be treated as State Vice President despite a Constitutional Court order to remove him from office when it nullified the May 2019 presidential elections.
Chimulirenji is still using a police convoy with sirens and security personnel just as when he was Vice President before the court order.
During a DPP and UDF rally at Njamba Freedom Park in Blantyre on Sunday, Chimulirenji arrived in full convoy lead by a police vehicle with sirens.
And again in Chikwawa on Wednesday where Mutharika was opening an irrigation scheme, Chimulirenji also arrived in a convoy of about six vehicles but unlike Njamba, there were no sirens.
This is an open display of contempt of court by Mutharika.
The court reinstated Saulos Chilima as Vice President and he is yet to get his full benefits as current Vice President.
“This is blatant disregard of the law and it is high time our courts jail these people who are in contempt not giving them suspended sentences or fines. This is why they keep on disrespecting the laws,” said a political analyst.
The DPP impunity has reached high levels with the Chimulirenji case, just days after disobeying another court order to fire two Principal Secretaries Grey Nyandule Phiri and Cliff Chiunda who were convicted for disrespecting a Supreme Court order to apologize to Malawians in the tractorgate scandal.
Despite their conviction and a 9 month suspended sentence, the two are still reporting for duties against public service rules and regulations.
